Teijin Chem Invests in Chinas Development

Teijin Chemicals, Limited (Tokyo, Japan) is taking advantage of all the opportunities and growth that is occurring in China and plans to benefit and profit from increasing demand for polycarbonate resins, estimated at 14%, in the country, as well as increase its own market share. Teijin is planning to construct a third polycarbonate unit addition at a site in Jiaxing, China, with a proposed investment of $90 million.
Currently, Teijin is performing preliminary design for the unit, which will produce 60,000 metric tons a year of polycarbonate resins, once complete. Teijin is planning to select an E+P+C (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor by late spring with hopes to start construction by mid-summer of this year.
Teijin initially began producing polycarbonates in China in April 2005 with an annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tons a year. The company will bring a second unit online with equal capacity at the end of this year. When the third unit is complete and operational in the second quarter of 2009, Teijin will have a total production capacity of 160,000 metric tons a year of polycarbonate resins in China. Teijin Chemicals total worldwide capacity will reach 480,000 metric tons a year.
Teijin has been producing polycarbonates since 1960 and was the first to develop, produce and distribute optical grade polycarbonate that is used in the ever-popular compact discs. Teijin has since established itself around the world with production sites and sales offices in Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United States, Mexico and Canada.
