Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Begins Commercial Operation of a 680MW Peaking Station in Western Tennessee

Industrial Information Resources, Inc (Houston, Texas) has confirmed that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) began commercial operation of their Lagoon Creek Peaking Station on July 5, 2001. The 680 mega-watt (MW) station located 10-miles outside of the town of Nutbush in western Tennessee, consists of eight 85MW GE 7EA combustion turbine generators in a simple-cycle configuration. The units will operate for a maximum of 30 percent of the available hours each year.

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, CT) was awarded the Turn-Key Design-Build contract for the plant and after breaking ground in the spring of 2000, completed the station in just 12 months. The 180-acre site was chosen because of its close proximity to several major natural gas pipelines and two major 500-kilovolt and 161-kilovolt TVA transmission lines. The new Lagoon Creek station will help TVA meet the 700 to 1000MW annual growth and summer peak demands the company has been experiencing recently.
