Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Swift Current Energy (Boston, Massachusetts) said Monday its new windfarm in Texas has started operations. Industrial Info is tracking $3 billion worth of wind projects under construction or in the final commissioning stage in Texas, which leads the nation in wind generation. About half of the investment value is attributed to grassroot projects from NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida).

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), wind generation accounted for 26% of the Lone Star State's electricity mix in 2022, leading the nation for the 17th year in a row.

Swift Current's Castle Gap Windfarm in Mills County, about 100 miles west of Waco in Central Texas, features a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) (Minneapolis, Minnesota). The wind turbine power plant has a generation capacity of 197 megawatts (MW). Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here to read a detailed project report.

Among the NextEra projects is its $650 million Canyon Wind project in Scurry County. The windfarm will include 48 turbines, each rated between 2 and 4.2 MW, to achieve nameplate generation capacity of more than 300 MW. Construction kicked off earlier this month and is expected to wrap up in 2024. The project has a PPA in place with Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) for the project's full output. Click here to read more information.

The two other NextEra projects are the $375 million Inertia Windfarm near Haskell, between Dallas and Lubbock, which is expected to achieve nameplate generation of more than 300 MW, and the approximately 224-MW Shamrock Wind project in Ozona, about 100 miles north of the Texas-Mexico border. M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for both projects and expects to complete construction in 2024 and by the end of the year, respectively. Both projects will utilize wind turbines from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts). Subscribers can read detailed information on the Inertia and Shamrock projects.

In the final commissioning stage is construction of the Goodnight Windfarm in Claude, about 30 miles east of Amarillo, and commercial operations are expected by the end of the year. The windfarm will utilize 59 Vestas wind turbines for a generation capacity of about 265 MW. The project is fully owned by Serena, formerly known as Omega Energia. Click here for the project report.

Ironically, the only non-grassroot wind project under construction in Texas being tracked by Industrial Info is attributed to an oil and gas major, Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) (London, England). In the final commissioning stage is its $200 million repowering of the 160-MW Brazos windfarm in Fluvanna, southeast of Lubbock, which will boost the capacity to 182 MW. Shell fully owns and operates the windfarm. Subscribers can read a project report.
