Top Crop Windfarm Expands with 132 More Turbines at Estimated $450 Million

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Horizon Wind Energy LLC (Houston, Texas) is planning to expand the Top Crop Windfarm with an extra 132 wind turbines. The addition is estimated to cost $450 million.

Currently, the Top Crop facility in Illinois has a nameplate capacity of 102 megawatts (MW). There are 68 GE 1.5-MW wind turbines operating. When combined, Phase I and Phase II will have 200 wind turbines, with approximately 300 MW being produced at its maximum output.

Phase I was completed in the fourth quarter of 2009, and Phase II is scheduled for the second quarter of 2010. Due to colder-than-average temperatures and weather conditions, strengthening of the roads won't commence until the thaw is present. Construction will start as weather conditions improve.

Sargent & Lundy (Bloomington, Illinois) performed the engineering for both phases of the Top Crop Project. D.H. Blattner will be the general contractor and provide turnkey services in the completion of Phase II of the Top Crop Expansion Project.
