Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Anglo American plc (NASDAQ:AAUK) (London) is on schedule to complete its Barro Alto nickel project by early 2010. Barro Alto is the company's largest investment in Brazil, with a capital cost of $1.5 billion, up from initial $1.2 billion. Barro Alto is located in Goias State about 135 kilometers northwest of the country's capital city, Brasilia. The project includes the extension of the existing open pit mine operation and the construction a new ferronickel smelter and refinery in order to produce 36,000 tons per year of nickel contained in ferronickel over a minimum of its 26-year mine life. The project contains resources of 116.2 million tons at an average grade of 1.54% nickel. Construction started in November 2007, and project completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010, ramping up to full capacity in 2011.
Last year, SNC-Lavalin (TSX:SNC) (Montreal, Quebec) was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction/management contract for the project and is providing services through Minerconsul Engenharia Limitada (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), which it recently acquired. Construcao e Comercio Camargo Correa S. A. (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is in charge of construction.
Anglo American operates the Barro Alto project through its Brazilian subsidiary, Anglo American Brasil Limitada (Sao Paulo). Anglo American Brasil is involved in the production of base metals, ferrous metals and industrial minerals through its subsidiaries Codemin, Catalao and Copebras.
