Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fabricated metals are used to manufacture a wide variety of products, such as automotive, construction and military components, and U.S. producers are building out capacity to meet demand. Industrial Info is tracking $4.5 billion worth of projects in the U.S. fabricated-metal product sector that are under construction, almost all of which is attributed to grassroot and expansion projects.
Nearly one-fourth of the project activity is attributed to a roughly $1 billion expansion at an ammunition plant in Middletown, Iowa, owned by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Iowa Army Ammunitions. The project entails constructing a building addition that will house a new melt-pour assembly line to increase production of 155-millimeter high-explosive projectiles by 500%, adding capacity for an additional 12,000 to 20,000 units per month. News reports indicate the U.S. government has given more than 1.5 million 155-millimeter rounds to Ukraine. Production is expected to begin in 2027. Another project is Remington's $100 million grassroot firearms-manufacturing plant in LaGrange, Georgia. In addition to providing manufacturing capacity, the plant also will serve as Remington Firearms' new headquarters and provide research and development space. Remington produces shotguns and rifles for both military and civilian applications. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2026. Click here to read the project report.
In terms of automotive-related projects, Magna International Incorporated (NYSE:MGA) (Aurora, Ontario) is building an 800,000-square-foot grassroot frame and battery enclosure manufacturing facility in Stanton, Tennessee, with construction expected to wrap up later this year; see project report. The plant will support the next-generation all-electric trucks to be assembled at Ford Motor Company's (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) BlueOval City complex being built nearby. As the electric vehicle market faces challenges, Ford said in August it plans to delay first production to the second half of 2027; see related project report.
Fabricated metal projects linked to construction include Central States Manufacturing's (Tontitown, Arkansas) $300 million prefabricated metal frame building-manufacturing plant in Tontitown. Central States manufactures a wide range of metal building components, including roofing, siding, and trim, for commercial and residential applications.
Meanwhile, Kentuckiana Curb Company Incorporated (Simpsonville, Kentucky) is building a grassroot heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment plant in Simpsonville. The 380,000-square-foot plant will boost the company's manufacturing capacity for high-efficiency commercial HVAC units for large-volume air movement. Both projects are expected to wrap up by the end of the year. Subscribers can read more information on the metal frame and HVAC projects.
Among other fabricated metal products are cables/wires, and Hellenic Cables' (Athens, Greece) grassroot cables-manufacturing plant in Baltimore, Maryland will support power generation and transmission and distribution. "The new factory will be dedicated to manufacturing underwater and underground cables for offshore wind and grid modernization applications," Hellenic said in a press release. "It will address the 21st century, growing energy transition market with high-tech products made in a modern, clean, low-noise, ultra-low-emissions environment." Hellenic expects the plant will be fully operational toward the end of 2026. Click here for the project report.
