Summary

Iberdrola is upping its investments in the U.S. Power Industry, pushing for more renewable power generation and better efficiency in the transmission and distribution sector.

Solar Brightens U.S. Outlook

Iberdrola S.A. is preparing to invest up to $18 billion in U.S. Power Industry projects through 2028, making it a core part of the company's global network expansion. In the first nine months of 2026, subsidiary Avangrid installed more than 11 gigawatts (GW) of capacity across its 25-state portfolio.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than $5.7 billion worth of active and proposed projects across the U.S. from Iberdrola and its subsidiaries, more than $2 billion of which is attributed to projects under construction.

Attachment According to Industrial Info Resources data, solar fuels more of Iberdrola's U.S.-based projects under development than any other energy source. These include its Oregon Trail Solar Plant in Arlington, Oregon, which is being built next to Iberdrola's existing Pachwáywit Fields Solar Plant. While the latter is one of the state's largest operational solar farms, providing 162 megawatts (MW) to the grid, Oregon Trail is designed to provide 41 MW to Amazon.com's regional data centers, under a power purchase agreement (PPA).

Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the Oregon Trail plant in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases, where subscribers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and a project report.

Iberdrola also made strides in recent weeks on its 41-MW Shutler Battery Energy-Storage System (BESS) in Arlington, Oregon, and its 80-MW Bright Mountain Solar Plant in Bonnyman, Kentucky, both of which will provide energy to their regional grids and currently are slated for completion toward the end of 2027. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Shutler BESS and Bright Mountain projects.

Altogether, Iberdrola's operational U.S. solar plants generated 2,164 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the first nine months of 2026, an 8.7% increase when compared with the same period in 2025.

By the Numbers
  • More than $5.7 billion: Total investment value of projects across the U.S. from Iberdrola and its subsidiaries
  • 8.7%: Increase in Iberdrola's solar generation in the first nine months of 2026, compared with the same period last year
  • 6.6%: Increase in Iberdrola's wind generation in the first nine months of 2026, compared with the same period last year

Sprucing Up the Power Grid

On the wind-energy side of the renewables market, Iberdrola's operational, onshore U.S. plants generated 15,100 GWh in the first nine months of 2026, a 6.6% increase when compared with the same period in 2025. The company also said its Osagrove Flats Windfarm in Dana, Illinois, was "progressing as planned," with operations at the 153-MW windfarm set to begin in the coming weeks. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.

"We are seeing in the U.S. a huge demand," said Ignacio Galan, the executive chairman of Iberdrola, in an earnings call with investors. "In the last 18 months, the U.S. has already installed something like 89,000 MW of new renewables and batteries."

Galan also said his company expects "to continue in the same range" for the near term: "I think we have already identified something like 85,000 MW of new capacity, which is going to be built in the next 12 months."

Iberdrola also is working to improve its transmission and distribution (T&D) capacity across the U.S., particularly in New York. Avangrid is at work on a 20.7-mile rebuild of a line from Montour Falls to Ithaca, as part of its Finger Lakes Area Infrastructure Project (FLAIR), and is upgrading its Meyer Substation in Dansville, New York, through the addition of two transformers.

Both projects are managed by New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), an Avangrid subsidiary. Subscribers can learn more from detailed project reports on the line rebuild and substation upgrade.
