U.S. Semiconductor, High-Tech Demand Drives $17 Billion in 4Q Kickoffs
Industrial Info is tracking more than $17 billion worth of U.S.-based projects for the development of semiconductors and computers that are set to begin construction in the fourth quarter
The global need for semiconductors, driven by online commerce and increasingly ubiquitous AI, is fueling projects such as Micron Technology Incorporated's (NASDAQ:MU) (Boise, Idaho) $15 billion expansion of its Boise Fab 4 Memory and Semiconductors Campus in Boise, Idaho, which is readying to kick off an estimated six to seven years of construction. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more from a detailed project report, as well as the September 7, 2023, article - ISM: U.S. Manufacturing Activity Contracts Again But Continues to Improve, and August 3, 2023, article - IIR Webinar: Global Automotive and Semiconductor Sectors Are Booming.
Solar cells are a major component in the energy transition, and companies such as Calypso Energy (Chicago, Illinois) are racing to meet demand. Calypso is preparing to begin a pair of renovations for a new solar cell plant in Montgomery, Illinois, at a site formerly owned by Caterpillar Incorporated (NYSE:CAT) (Deerfield, Illinois). The Montgomery Village Board unanimously approved the company's acquisition of the vacant space in July, and construction is expected to run through the end of 2024. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the renovations of Building G and Building H.
Just as solar cells are fueling cleaner power generation, hydrogen fuel cells are driving much of the energy transition in the automotive sector. Symbio North America Corporation, a joint venture between Michelin (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and Faurecia (Nanterre, France), is preparing to install a new production line at its hydrogen fuel cell plant in Poway, California. Earlier this year, the California Energy Commission awarded Symbio a $9 million grant to support a manufacturing plant for hydrogen-fueled vehicles and fuel cells in Temecula. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Poway and Temecula projects.
Other companies are expanding their output of hardware commonly used in personal and commercial computer systems. ABB Limited (Zurich, Switzerland) is preparing to add a new building to its campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to increase production of its Elastimold brand electronic connectors, while Sanmina Corporation (NASDAQ:SANM) is readying for major additions at its wiring boards plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, which produces optical-line termination (OLT) cards for Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (Espoo, Finland).
In a recent earnings-related conference call, executives at Sanmina attributed improving conditions in the sector for semiconductors and computers to an improving supply chain, which they say has patched over many of its pandemic-induced gaps. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the ABB and Sanmina projects.
