U.S. Steelmakers Gird for $1 Billion in First-Quarter Kickoffs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Three major steel producers are leading capital investments set to kick off across the U.S. in January, with demand from the automotive and renewable-energy industries driving their capacity additions. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1 billion worth of steel-manufacturing projects that are set to begin construction in the first quarter of 2025, with revamps accounting for the largest number of developments.

Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is preparing to begin work on a $280 million modernization of its steel coil and plate mill in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The company plans to convert the existing, 1.2 million-ton-per-year plant into a highly advanced tandem Steckel mill, which is designed to produce thinner, stronger, higher-quality plate. SMS Group (Mönchengladbach, Germany), which is providing the technology, says "the improved furnace efficiency reduces the system's natural gas consumption."

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz (Stuttgart, Germany) agreed to buy Nucor's Econiq-RE brand of steel to supply vehicles produced at its own plant in Tuscaloosa. Nucor says its Econiq-RE steel is made exclusively from renewable energy and high-quality carbon offsets to negate any Scope 1 or Scope 2 emissions. "The advantage of where Nucor sits is several fold, not the least of which having a carbon footprint today that is certainly best-in-class," said Leon Topalian, the chief executive officer of Nucor, in a recent earnings-related conference call. He added that the company soon could reach a point "where we have some of the lowest carbon raw materials available anywhere in the world today."

JSW Steel USA, a subsidiary of JSW Group (Mumbai, India), plans to begin a $110 million modernization of its steel pipe and plate mill in Baytown, Texas, about 30 miles outside Houston. The company is replacing older and obsolete cooling beds at the 1.2 million-ton-per-year facility with three new accelerating cooling beds, along with improved quench and automation systems. The plant's products include transition pieces and towers for the offshore wind market; transition pieces connect the wind turbine's monopile to its tower.

JSW's project follows a $145 million plan to modernize its mills in Ohio. "These investments have the potential to significantly reduce U.S. import reliance in the infrastructure and renewable-energy sectors," said Parth Jindal, the director of JSW Steel USA, in a press release.

Pacific Steel Group (San Diego, California) is planning to build a steel rebar mill and scrap metal-recycling plant near Mojave, which would be the first new steel mill in California in more than 50 years. Earlier this year, the Kern County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project, which would operate in accordance with California's low-carbon goals: The mill is designed to recycle scrap metal into 380,000 tons per year of rebar for construction use. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.

"Today, not a pound of steel is manufactured in the state of California," said Mark Olson, the vice president of mill operations for Pacific Steel Group, at a meeting with Kern County supervisors earlier this year. "The state has an abundance of scrap, which today gets containerized and shipped overseas, or gets put on trucks and rail cars shipped out of state, where steel is produced in less clean ways and then shipped hundreds or thousands of miles back into the state. Obviously, significant greenhouse-gas emissions are associated with that."
