Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (New Haven, Connecticut) is providing construction and/or engineering services in every U.S. geographic region, across multiple industries. Whiting-Turner is involved in nearly $1 billion in project starts and completions that are planned for the fourth quarter, according to Industrial Info's project database, covering the Food & Beverage, Industrial Manufacturing and Pharmaceutical & Biotech industries.

The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry leads all others in its total investment value (TIV) for projects kicking off before the end of the year, including two in Maryland that are set to begin construction: the University of Maryland's $110 million Biopark research building addition in Baltimore, and the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) $35 million addition to Johns Hopkins Montgomery County Campus in Rockville. Whiting-Turner has been awarded construction on both projects.

The university expansion includes the construction of an eight-story facility for multiple commercial research operations, while the NIH plans to add a three-story building for its National Cancer Institute to research epidemiology, genetics and related areas. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the university and NIH projects.

The Food & Beverage Industry is the biggest spender overall for both kickoffs and completions in the fourth quarter, with the nation's top retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Incorporated (NYSE:WMT), employing Whiting-Turner fpr a project in its hometown: a $50 million dry-storage distribution center in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The facility will feature more than 1 million square feet of storage and more than 200,000 square feet of shipping space. Wal-Mart recently boosted its role in the grocery-delivery market through its acquisition of same-day delivery service Parcel (Brooklyn, New York), which offers evening deliveries and can handle perishable and frozen foods, according to USA Today. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Industrial Manufacturing Industry has Whiting-Turner onboard for a slew of project completions for the current quarter, including two major projects from FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee): the $199 million expansion of a parcel-sorting hub in Independence, Kentucky, and the $118 million construction of a grassroot distribution center in Houston, Texas. The Kentucky facility is set to nearly double in size to 635,000 square feet, while the Texas facility is expected to be about 800,000 square feet. Both will support regional distribution operations. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Kentucky and Texas projects.

The Food & Beverage Industry also plays a role in fourth-quarter completions, including two from major grocery chains: Lidl Dienstleistung GmbH & Company's (Neckarsulm, Germany) $125 million grocery distribution center in Mebane, North Carolina, and Costco Wholesale Corporation's (NASDAQ:COST) (Issaquah, Washington) $120 million meat-processing plant in Morris, Illinois. Lidl's 900,000-square-foot facility is expected to support its regional stores, while Costco is adding four production lines for hot dogs, sausages, meatballs and organics. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Lidl and Costco projects.
