Taking Transco to the Next Level

Despite an overall weakening of natural gas prices, Williams Companies reported solid growth in second-quarter 2026, fueled by higher natural gas transmission and storage revenues, as well as increased gathering volumes. Williams is playing a major role in providing natural gas-fired power generation to the U.S. East Coast through two sprawling, multi-phase expansions to its Transcontinental (Transco) Gas Pipeline system: the Southeast Supply Enhancement (SESE), which will expand service across Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama, and the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE), which will expand service across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, more than $900 million worth of projects related to NESE or SESE are nearing or under construction, with completions currently set for the second half of 2027. Larry Larsen, the chief operating officer of Williams, said in this week's quarterly earnings-related conference call that "some early in-service" for SESE could begin in early 2027, with full in-service as early as the third quarter.

Along with nine projects to add or modify compressor stations, Williams is adding a 30.8-mile pipeline segment in central Virginia and a 24.6-mile segment in western North Carolina, both of which will carry up to 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas to Transco's mainline.
