Williams' Transco Pipeline Delivers Record Natural Gas Volume After Completing Expansions

Williams Companies Incorporated (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) recently reported a record volume of natural gas on its interstate Transco pipeline after completing two major expansions

Released Monday, January 10, 2022

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Natural gas pipeline operator Williams Companies Incorporated (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) recently delivered a record amount of natural gas on its Transcontinental (Transco) interstate pipeline, the largest natural gas pipeline system in the U.S. by volume, after completing two major expansion projects over the last two years. Industrial Info is tracking $3.5 billion in active projects belonging to Williams Companies, most of which is in the early planning phase.

Originally placed into service in 1949, Williams' Transco pipeline network traverses 10,000 miles, including an 1,800-mile mainline from southern Texas, along the Gulf Coast, through 12 Southeast and Atlantic Seaboard states along its way to New York City and other major metropolitan areas in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The pipeline is responsible for approximately 15% of the nation's natural gas, amid growing U.S. demand, and Williams has nearly tripled the Transco's contracted capacity in 2021 from 2008.

Last week, the pipeline set a record volume for the delivery of natural gas--17.15 million dekatherms (MMdt)--surpassing the previous high set on February 20, 2020. The latter was due largely to extreme winter weather, but the last week's recent record was a result of "incremental growth projects along Transco's existing footprint," the company said in a press release. The latest project was placed into full service in December.

Last month, Williams completed the Leidy South expansion of its existing Pennsylvania infrastructure, which was designed to carry about 600 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas supply from the Marcellus and Utica shale plays to markets along the Atlantic Seaboard in time for the 2021-2022 winter heating season. That amount of natural gas is enough to meet the daily needs of approximately 2.5 million homes, according to the company website. In December, 457 million cubic feet per day was brought online, but partial service began in November 2020, with 125 MMSCFD online.

The project consisted of three major expansions, including the Benton and Hilltop loops, to transport natural gas from Clinton County, Pennsylvania to Lycoming County. Williams also completed a Hensel pipeline replacement in Clinton County. Subscribers can see detailed reports on the Benton and Hilltop and Hensel replacement projects.

The Transco pipeline features 57 compressor stations, and the Leidy South project included work on two of them: an uprate at Compressor Station 605 in Wyoming County and a unit addition at Compressor Station 610 in Columbia County. Subscribers can see reports on the Leidy South 605 and 610 compressor station projects.

In second-quarter 2021, Williams brought online the final phase, Phase III, of its Hillabee expansion in Alabama, which will expand natural gas supply in the Southeastern U.S. by transporting up to 1 billion cubic feet per day to the Sabal Trail Pipeline that runs from Alabama to central Florida. Phase III involved constructing two new pipeline expansions totaling 12 miles. In May 2020, Williams completed Phase II, which involved constructing 11 miles of pipeline looping, a new compressor station and modifications to another compressor station.
