Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Wood Group Kenny has won a preliminary front-end engineering and design (Pre-FEED) contract on the Bonaparte Floating LNG project. GDF Suez Bonaparte, a subsidiary of GDF Suez S.A. (GSZ:FP) (Paris, France), and Australian company Santos (ASX:STO) (Adelaide, Australia) are developing the Bonaparte Floating LNG project.
If the project reaches capital approval, as planned in late 2014, the facility will be one of the first worldwide. The project will commercialize the remotely situated Petrel, Tern and Frigate natural gas fields within the Bonaparte Basin in Australian waters. It is currently anticipated that the Bonaparte FLNG facility will be exporting about 2 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year, beginning in 2018 or early 2019.
Kellogg Brown & Root (NYSE:KBR) (KBR) (Houston, Texas) is undertaking the huge task of pre-FEED for the FLNG facility from the United Kingdom. KBR will compete for the FEED contract with one other unnamed company; GDF Suez Bonaparte has begun to assess cost estimates submitted by both companies. Engineering companies, Granherne (a subsidiary of KBR) and DORIS Engineering (Paris, France), have completed pre-FEED on the project. Granherne worked purely on the upstream subsea aspect of the project, while DORIS Engineering developed the concept for midstream.
The new pre-FEED contract awarded to Wood Group Kenny (WGK) this month is also for upstream works. Wood Group Kenny is proceeding immediately with execution of a subsea concept definition study, based out of its office in Perth, Australia. WGK will continue to carry out the study as part of pre-FEED. until the FEED phase begins in the fourth quarter of this year.
WGK has worked on a number of large subsea and pipeline projects in Australia, including Gorgon, Browse (recently cancelled), Ichthys LNG and the Prelude FLNG project. WGK also recently carried out engineering work on the Macedon natural gas project, Equus natural gas and condensate field development, Pluto LNG, and Julimar natural gas field development that will supply Wheatstone.
The Australian Regional Director of Wood Group Kenny, Phil Brown, remarked: "We are delighted to have been awarded this important contract to support GDF Suez's operations in Australia, which recognises our expertise in subsea engineering, and in particular, FLNG emerging technology. "This is a new client for us, and we hope to establish a long and successful business relationship with them. WGK has been based in Perth for nearly 30 years, and in that time we have developed a very strong, local presence."
