Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The world's leading fertilizer producer, Yara International (Oslo, Norway), and French energy company ENGIE (EPA:GSZ) have agreed to push ahead with a green hydrogen project located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Project Yuri will comprise a 10-megawatt (MW) polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser powered by 18-MW of solar power and supported by an 8-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) that will generate renewable hydrogen for use in Yara Australia's major anhydrous ammonia production facility at Karratha. It will be constructed next to the plant, which currently uses gas-fired power for all of its needs. Due for completion in 2024, the first phase of the project will produce up to 640 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year as a zero-carbon feedstock for the ammonia plant. Industrial Info is also tracking a planned expansion project that will see the addition of a hydrogen plant with a capacity ranging from 150 to 500 MW, worth almost US$200 million in investment.

Yara Pilbara Fertilizers plant is one of the largest ammonia production sites in the world, with an average output of 840,000 metric tonnes of ammonia annually--roughly 5% of the global traded market. The pilot project has benefitted from a grant of almost US$30 million from the Australian government's ARENA Renewable Hydrogen Deployment Funding Round. Yara Clean Ammonia president, Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, said the ammonia plant will be the first in western Australia to use green hydrogen in the production process. "We value this support from government which provides further validation of the Yuri project as a credible early mover in the development of renewable hydrogen opportunities...developing a clean ammonia market for diverse application such as carbon-free food production, low-emission fuel for shipping and power, and ammonia for industrial applications."

"We have a strong pipeline of renewables, storage and hydrogen projects in Australia; as each one of these projects reaches financial close, construction and commissioning, we get closer to decarbonising our economy and realizing our ambitious net zero targets," added ENGIE Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer, Andrew Hyland.

Industrial Info is also tracking the hugely ambitious Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH), also located in the mining and industrial Pilbara region, which aims to be one of the world's largest renewables and green hydrogen energy hubs. Led by U.K. oil and gas company BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England)--which took a controlling 40.6% stake in the project this summer--it aims to potentially develop up to 26 gigawatts (GW) of combined solar and wind power generating capacity. This could in turn produce 1.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen or 9 million tonnes of green ammonia per annum. The government has already granted the AREH project "major project status", which recognizes it as one national significance that will benefit from being fast-tracked through the approvals process. The first phase of the green hydrogen project, located on a 6,500-kilometer site in the east Pilbara region, is worth US$13 billion.
