Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held leading ethanol design-build firm ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) is one of the latest cellulosic-based ethanol developers to receive funding to develop a pilot-scale, cellulosic-based ethanol pilot plant.

The company signed an agreement with the Department of Energy and will receive $25 million in funding to construct the plant, which will be at the existing Lifeline Ethanol LLC ethanol plant in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Construction of the estimated $31 million plant is expected to begin in August of this year, and the plant is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2011. The plant will process switchgrass and sorghum grain feedstocks into 5 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol.

Lifeline will act as the host site for the plant and has been producing fuel ethanol at the Saint Joseph plant since late 2007. The company produces 50 million gallons per year of the renewable fuel, as well as corn based food products.

Enzyme producer Novozymes North America Incorporated (Denmark) also was named as a subwardee for the project.

There are 37 second-generation cellulosic ethanol plants under development in North America, representing more than $3.6 billion in capital spending.
