Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) -- Denmark has announced plans to generate 50% of its electricity from wind power as part of a series of measures designed to increase its investment in renewable energy and reduce its reliance on coal, gas and oil-fired power.

The new target doubles the amount of electricity (25%) that Denmark currently generates from windfarms. The government has announced a binding energy agreement to 2020 that has been agreed by the majority of politicians in its parliament. Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Martin Lidegaard, described the deal as "the broadest, the greenest, and the most long-term energy agreement that has ever been reached in Denmark". The framework, agreed by almost all rival politicians from the country's Liberal Party, People's Party, Red-Green Alliance and the Conservative Party, will also lead to CO2 emissions in 2020 being 34% lower than they were in 1990. The government also wants to lower its energy consumption by more than 12 % in 2020, compared to 2006.

Lidegaard said: "In our everyday political work, the parties are different shades of red and blue. But together we have laid down the foundation for a green future. Denmark will once again be the global leader in the transition to green energy. This will prepare us for a future with increasing prices for oil and coal. Moreover, it will create some of the jobs that we need so desperately, now and in the coming years."

The government has agreed to build a total of 3,300-megawatts (MW) of new wind power, of which 2,000 MW will be completed by 2020. It recently gave the green light to two large offshore windfarm projects: Kriegers Flak (640 MW) located in waters between Denmark and Germany and an additional 400 MW at the existing Horns Rev windfarm site, off the west coast of Jutland. Investments in biomass and biogas have also been promised while there will also be an increase in the rollout of onshore windfarms.
