Spanish Nuclear Almaraz I Stops Due to an Unplanned Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Córdoba, Argentina)--Spanish company Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo (CNAT) (Madrid, Spain) is performing an unplanned outage for Unit 1 at the Almaraz nuclear power plant in the Extremadura region of central Spain.

The facility is equipped with two 1,050-megawatt (MW) Siemens pressurized water reactors (PWR). The unit began operations in May 1981 and came offline on Friday, June 15, because of an electrical failure.

Plant officials told Industrial Info that that the outage was caused by a failure in a voltage transformer that caused a fire and a partial destruction of the electrical substation. During the incident, a worker who performed services for that company suffered injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital. The unit is expected to be reconnected to the grid on Wednesday, June 20.

Unit 2 of Almaraz is under way with a general maintenance and refueling outage and is expected to resume operations on Tuesday, June 19.
