Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Cordoba, Argentina)--IEnova (D.F., México), previously called Sempra México, announced the construction kickoff for the first phase of a pipeline in Sasabe, Arizona, which is near the Mexican border. The pipeline will import natural gas from the U.S. IEnova is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (California).
GDI Grupo Desarrollo Infraestructura (D.F., México) was selected to construct the pipe. The first phase involves a 500-kilometer, 36-inch-diameter line that will run from Sasabe to the Mexican city of Guaymas, in the state of Sonora. The pressure needed for the transportation of the natural gas will come directly from the connection with the pipeline in Sasabe.
The second phase will be a 320-kilometer, 30-inch-diameter stretch that will start in Guaymas through the city El Oro (Sinaloa).
The third phase was announced recently. As with the second phase, detailed engineering work is under way. This stretch will consist of a 20-kilometer pipe and will be directed toward Puerto Libertad en Sonora.
CHM2M HILL (D.F., México) is in charge of the basic and detailed engineering. It is wrapping up the final engineering details on Phase I, parallel to the construction.
The Comisión Federal de Energía (CFE) (D.F., México) will have access to the pipeline to supply natural gas to its power plants.
The objective of the pipeline is to import natural gas from the U.S. to supply the states of Sonora and Sinaloa at a cheaper price. The expectation is to begin operations for the entire pipeline during the third quarter of 2016.
