Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Baytown, Texas, was in the news last week when Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) said it will proceed with a $2 billion expansion of its Baytown chemical plant. The Gulf Coast community is a major focal point of petrochemical development, but it also features significant steel manufacturing, distribution and warehousing, and refining project activity. In all, Industrial Info is tracking nearly $5 billion in active capital projects in Baytown.

ExxonMobil gave the green light for a 400,000-ton-per-year Vistamaxx performance polymer unit and a 350,000-ton-per-year linear alpha olefins unit. The expansion is expected to start operations in 2022.

Industrial Info has tracked the planned Vistamaxx and linear alpha olefins unit additions since October, 2018. Hargrove Engineers & Constructors (Mobile, Alabama) is performing the preliminary design for the units. See Industrial Info's project reports on the Vistamaxx unit and the linear alpha olefins unit.

The expansion at ExxonMobil's largest U.S. integrated chemical complex "will put us in a solid position to maximize the value of increased Permian Basin production and will deliver higher-demand, higher-value products produced at our Gulf Coast refining and chemical facilities," said ExxonMobil Chief Executive Officer Darren Woods in a press statement. The expansion also will allow the company to enter the linear alpha olefins market.

Another big Chemical Processing Industry project, Covestro AG's (Leverkusen, Germany) methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) unit addition, is in the planning stage. The unit would produce about 500,000 tons per year of MDI upon its planned completion in fourth-quarter 2024. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Chemical Processing Industry isn't the only big project player in Baytown. Construction of JSW Group's (Mumbai, India) 1 million-ton-per-year steel pipe and plate mill melt shop addition kicked off in October 2018. The project includes the installation of a new 120-ton electric arc furnace and a 120-inch wide caster. Completion is planned for December this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In the petroleum refining sector, ExxonMobil has been conducting market analysis for a planned 60,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) light crude oil expansion at its 584,000-BBL/d Baytown refinery. The expansion comprises upgrades to the existing crude units. Construction could kick off in third-quarter 2019, with completion in fourth-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info is tracking about $285 million in distribution and warehousing project activity in Baytown. Construction is underway on a speculative logistics center campus by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Incorporated (Houston, Texas). The center, which is planned for completion in late 2020, will include eight buildings totaling about 3 million square feet. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In addition to capital projects, Industrial Info is tracking more than $294 million in maintenance project activity in Baytown. This includes Chevron Phillips Chemical's (The Woodlands, Texas) planned first-quarter 2020 maintenance turnaround at a low-density polyethylene unit located at its Cedar Bayou Olefins & Resins Complex. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
