Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $62 billion worth of U.S. Power Industry projects that have been completed or are on track for completion this year. While natural gas-fired power plants represent some of the largest projects, solar power leads the nation in the overall value of completed projects.

While natural gas-fired power plant construction in the U.S. has tapered off in recent years with the advent of renewable forms of energy, the top-ten list of highest-value U.S. power projects to be completed in the U.S. this year is dominated by gas-fired projects. Among the largest of these is DTE Energy Company's (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit, Michigan) Blue Water Energy Center in East China, Michigan. Construction on the plant commenced in late 2018 but was impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic during construction. The plant was finally completed this summer. The facility uses General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) equipment to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 1,150 megawatts (MW). Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the full report.

While known for its investment in renewable energy projects, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) has shored up its baseload generating capacity in Florida with the completion of the natural gas-fired Dania Beach Clean Energy Center in Fort Lauderdale. Construction began in 2019 and finished early this summer. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services on the project. With more than $22.7 billion in projects on track to be wrapped up in the U.S. this year, solar leads the U.S. in the value of 2022 power project completions. These projects range in size from less than 100 MW to several hundred MW and are increasingly accompanied by battery energy storage systems (BESS). IP Athos LLC (San Francisco, California) completed two phases of a solar farm and accompanying BESS earlier this year. The first phase of the Athos photovoltaic plant in Desert Center, California, was completed this summer and has a nameplate generating capacity of 350 MW. Another phase provided an additional 300 MW of generation. Completed alongside Phase I was a 500-MW BESS facility to help provide power when the sun isn't shining. The solar plants use a combined 1.48 million thin-film solar modules. Subscribers can click here for related reports.

Texas leads the nation in both the value of number of completed solar projects, accounting for about $8 billion in 2022 solar completions. Project examples include National Grid plc's (NYSE:NGG) Noble solar plant near Denton, Texas. The facility, which was recently completed, uses more than 783,000 solar modules to achieve a generating capacity of 275 MW. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

While natural gas-fired projects lead in terms of the size of projects and solar leads by overall value, the largest single project to be completed this year is a windfarm. Last year, Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) commenced construction on a windfarm using 333 3-MW turbines, with Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) providing EPC services. The 999-MW Traverse windfarm near Weatherford, Oklahoma, was completed earlier this year. The windfarm is the third and final installment of Invenergy's North Central Energy Facilities, which also include the 199-MW Sundance Windfarm and the 287-MW Maverick wind project. The Traverse facility provides power to three states: Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Like solar power, Texas leads the U.S. in both the number and value of wind project completions. Among the largest wind projects to be completed in the state this year is Enel SpA's (Rome, Italy) Azure Sky Windfarm near Haskell, Texas, about 60 miles north of Abilene. The windfarm uses 80 turbines of varying capacities to achieve nameplate generation of 348 MW. The project wrapped up in the second quarter of this year, after about a year of construction.
