Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As it works to expand its renewables portfolio, Enel North America (Andover, Massachusetts), a subsidiary of Enel SpA (Rome, Italy), has said it signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for a portion of the output at a Texas solar plant under construction. Enel aims to install 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable generation and battery energy storage capacity, and spend $5.6 billion on clean-energy technologies, in North America through 2025. Industrial Info is tracking $17 billion worth of project activity from Enel and its subsidiaries across the continent, more than one third of which is in Texas.
Enel has agreed to supply BXP (NYSE:BXP), the largest publicly traded developer, owner, and manager of premier workplaces in the U.S, with a 21-megawatt (MW) portion of power from the approximately 202-MW, $350 million Estonian solar plant in Delta County, Texas. The solar plant will be paired with a 104-MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The plant is expected to be brought online in late 2024. Primoris Services Corporation (NASDAQ:PRIM) (Dallas, Texas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for both projects. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read detailed reports on the Estonian solar and BESS projects.
According to a related press release, Enel North America's installed portfolio includes more than 9.7 GW of utility-scale renewable capacity and 690 MW of utility-scale energy storage.
The company said it is "one of the largest renewable energy operators in Texas," with 3.3 GW of installed wind and solar capacity and 607 MW of battery storage capacity supporting the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid.
Earlier this month, Enel announced it more than tripled its operational utility-scale storage capacity in the Lone Star State by bringing five new BESS online, adding 369 MW to the power grid:
This includes the Stampede solar-plus-storage project in Hopkins County, which is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. The $270 million solar plant will utilize photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide 258.35 MW of solar generation, and will feature a 100.7-MW, $90 million BESS. Subscribers can read more information on the Stampede solar and BESS projects.
Although Enel has a major presence in Texas, Industrial Info is tracking projects attributed to the company across the U.S. Enel is developing the 700-MW Cow Creek wind power plant in Cheyenne, Colorado, in the far eastern part of the state near the Colorado-Kansas border. Also in the development stage is the Wapella Bluffs Windfarm in DeWitt County, Illinois, which is expected to utilize 41 Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark) turbines to produce 144 MW. Both projects are expected to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2024. Subscribers can read project reports for the Colorado and Illinois projects.
