Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Despite a recent food-product recall and a string of accidents at one of its largest facilities, Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (Chicago, Illinois) is pushing forward with a series of developments that are designed to bolster its already-strong status in the corn, soybean and ethanol markets. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.1 billion worth of active and planned projects from ADM, more than half of which is attributed to expansions of existing facilities.

Several of ADM's capital-spending projects are set at its research and production facilities in Decatur, Illinois, its largest location and North American headquarters. The company is putting the finishing touches on a $100 million expansion of its James R. Randall Research Center and a $5 million rebuild of the East Plant of its Soybean Oil Mill & Refinery, which suffered an explosion in September 2023 that injured eight workers. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Food & Beverage Project Database can learn more from detailed reports on the projects at the research center and East Plant.

The explosion at the East Plant was one of several 2023 accidents at the Decatur complex that left several employees injured and one dead, the latter from a rail accident at the West Plant in April. The same month saw a dust explosion in the West Plant's grain elevators that left three employees hospitalized; the U.S. Department of Labor later said "a lack of preventative maintenance on the explosion suppression system of a bucket elevator was a major factor," and the company was fined almost $325,000.

Nevertheless, ADM is proposing an expansion to the Decatur complex's alternative protein production facility, which already mills 20,000 bushels per day of corn into 313 million gallons per year of ethanol. The company has not yet determined how much capacity would be added. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.

The company also is preparing for an upgrade of the extractor at its soybean and canola-crushing plant in Windsor, Ontario, where it also is proposing a major expansion that would add grain dryers and grain storage tanks, among other components. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the upgrade and proposed expansion.

ADM also aims to expand its decarbonization program with, among other steps, carbon-capture and storage (CCS) additions at a pair of ethanol plants in eastern Iowa, both of which were first proposed in early 2022. The new units at the plants in Cedar Rapids and Clinton, Iowa, which are about 80 miles apart, each would handle up to 6 million tons per year of carbon dioxide (CO2). Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Cedar Rapids and Clinton projects.

The CCS efforts are part of ADM's regenerative agriculture program, which the company says will support farmers who take proactive steps to reduce their carbon footprint. "As our customers strive to decarbonize their own products and services, we are seeing a steady increase in the financial returns generated by our own decarbonization efforts from [our regenerative agriculture] partnerships to lowering the carbon footprint of our operations," said Juan Luciano, the chief executive officer of ADM, in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call. "The pace of this is accelerating as we move into 2024."

ADM also is venturing into a developing corner of the plastics market: plant-based polymer materials, which are used to make biodegradable plastics. These plastics are unique, as existing microorganisms in the environment can decompose the material; if adopted widely, this emerging technology could reduce the pileup of plastic waste.

In early 2022, ADM began construction on a $240 million polymers plant in Clinton, which is designed to produce polymers through fermentation of plant-based ingredients that will later become fibers, films and other types of materials. It is slated to finish construction toward the end of this year. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
