Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engineering and design-build firm AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) enjoyed a strong 2024, with a wide range of project developments in the U.S. and Canada driving substantial growth in its design business, particularly in the infrastructure and power-generation sectors. Public-sector projects drive much of AECOM's work over the coming year. Industrial Info is tracking more than $30 billion worth of active and proposed projects from AECOM across the U.S. and Canada, the bulk of which is attributed to transportation developments.

"Trends across our markets remain robust, and our backlog and pipeline are at record levels, characterized by a highly diverse mix of clients and sectors," said Troy Rudd, the chief executive officer of AECOM, in a quarterly earnings-related press release. AECOM's total backlog hit $23.9 billion at the end of 2024, an all-time record for the company and a 4% increase from the end of 2023.

As always, AECOM's biggest projects are in the transportation sector, two of which could be fully or nearly completed this year: a $1.1 billion modernization of the Pittsburgh International Airport that will relocate many of the ground-side functions to a new, 635,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the airside terminal; and the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 2nd Avenue subway expansion in East Harlem, which is designed to relieve overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue Line.

Work at the Pittsburgh airport could be completed as early as this summer. The new facility will handle ticketing, security and baggage claim; other new features include a five-level garage featuring nearly 4,500 spaces and new roads and bridges, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. New York's subway expansion, now in its second phase, will add 2.25 miles of line and three new stations. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can read detailed reports on the Pittsburgh and New York projects.

Projects that could begin construction before the end of the year include a new multimodal container terminal at the Port of New Orleans, for which AECOM is a design consultant. The expansion, which would include an industrial park and a distribution campus, has been generously supported by state and federal grants, including more than $300 million in federal funds over the past two years and a $230.5 million award from the Louisiana State Legislature this past summer. Last month, the project's sustainability management plan (SMP) received a $1 million backing from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Longer-term efforts featuring AECOM's services include New Jersey Transit Corporation's $2.3 billion overhaul of New Jersey's Portal Bridge, which traverses the Hackensack River near Kearny and supports an Amtrak line; and Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority's $2 billion Green Line extension in Minneapolis, Minnesota, also known as the Southwest Light Rail Project, which will add 14.5 miles of track to the Minneapolis/St. Paul light rail system. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the New Jersey and Minnesota projects.

On the power-generation side, AECOM is performing engineering services for the New York Power Authority's $267.4 million upgrade of a transmission line from Massena to Glenfield, including about 76 miles of single-circuit line and eight miles of double-circuit line. It is part of New York's Smart Path Connect project, which is designed to modernize more than 100 miles of transmission lines in the North County and the Mohawk Valley areas.
