Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global construction firm Skanska AB (Stockholm, Sweden) is notching up plenty of business in the U.S., where company executives say the construction market is stable, despite what one executive called "a very hesitant investor market." Industrial Info is tracking more than $12.5 billion worth of active and proposed projects across the U.S. featuring Skanska's services, the bulk of which is attributed to projects for universities, public transportation and data centers.

One of the largest public transportation projects featuring Skanska's services has been under construction since third-quarter 2022: the New Jersey Transit Corporation's $2.3 billion overhaul of New Jersey's Portal Bridge, which traverses the Hackensack River near Kearny and supports an Amtrak line. The bridge's owners aim to decommission and demolish the 2.44-mile structure, inaugurated in 1910, and replace it with a two-track, fixed-span bridge that would include new rail bridges over adjacent roadways.
The Portal Bridge project is managed by AECOM (Los Angeles, California) and STV Incorporated (New York, New York), who say the new structure "will break a major bottleneck for this critical link in the congested territory between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City." Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more from a detailed project report.
Another major transportation project has been under construction since 2014: Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's extension of the Purple Line on the Los Angeles subway system, the $1.25 billion first section of which will install 3.9 miles of track and three new stations. Skanska is providing design-build services for this portion of the project, which currently is set to be completed in mid-2027. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Data centers are becoming a bigger part of Skanska's portfolio, as evidenced in several projects for two tech titans: Microsoft Corporation (Redmond, Washington) and Amazon Web Services (Seattle, Washington). Microsoft is employing Skanska as the general contractor on the $400 million expansion of its data center campus in East Point, Georgia, which is part of Microsoft's broader development of what it calls the Azure East U.S. 3 cloud region. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
Amazon is employing Skanska in a similar role for the $300 million Building E and $300 million Building F at its Quail Ridge Data Center campus in Aldie, Virginia. Located in an area known as "data center alley," each building will comprise three structures and support cloud operations in the region. Buildings E and F are slated to finish construction in the summer and fall of 2026, respectively. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and detailed reports on Building E and Building F.
Anders Danielsson, the chief executive officer of Skanska, said in a recent earnings-related conference call that the U.S. data center market is among his company's most promising ventures: "It's a stable market, and we have definitely strong capacity here with specialized units, and we have a very close cooperation with our clients. So, we are definitely ready to continue that development, and we do see a good pipeline there."
Research and development projects at U.S. universities, particularly in the medical field, continue to be a top focus for Skanska's North American portfolio. Virginia Tech University hired Skanska as the general contractor for a $292 million addition to its College of Engineering in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Mitchell Hall Engineering & Research Building will include research labs plus utilities. It currently is set to wrap up toward the end of 2027. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
