Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--AGL Limited (Sydney, Australia) has scheduled maintenance outages in 2014 at the Loy Yang A and Torrens Island power plants to maximize their profitability and generation availability, while minimizing revenue lost when the units are offline.
AGL generates more than 4,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity from its coal, hydro and wind facilities, as well as natural gas-fired, simple-cycle and combined-cycle power stations. AGL owns and operates the 1,280-MW Torrens Island Power Station, which is considered the largest natural gas power station in Adelaide, South Australia. AGL also operates one of the country's biggest coal-fired power plants, the Loy Yang A power station, which produces 2,120 MW.
In 2009, AGL embarked on a substantial refurbishment program at the Torrens Island Power Station, which consists of Section A, with four 120-MW units, and Section B, with four 200-MW units. AGL, with selected contractor Yokogawa Australia Pty Limited (Hilton, Australia), completed the $28 million replacement of control and instrumentation systems on all units at Section B in 2010-11.
Following the completion of the control systems project in 2011, AGL began to replace and upgrade the burner management system (BMS) on the section B boilers in 2011. It completed upgrades to Unit B4 last year.
Recently, AGL signed contracts with Trushape Engineering Pty Limited (Adelaide, Australia) and Total Electrical Construction (TEC) Pty Limited (Port Pirie, Australia) to perform the Unit 3 BMS upgrade, which will commence very soon. Yokogawa is acting as a subcontractor to provide electrical and control system upgrades for the project.
A major outage on one of the B units is planned in the second half of 2014 for boiler modifications and turbine maintenance. The company also has scheduled two consecutive outages on units 1 and 2 in B section in 2015 and 2016.
