Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Power utility Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin) is taking great strides in cleaning up its environmental footprint through the construction of wind energy facilities and a natural gas-fired power plant. In the company's fourth-quarter 2018 earnings conference call, President John Larsen said the company had retired approximately 30% of is fossil-fueled generation capacity since 2005 and planned to eliminate all existing coal-fired stations from Alliant's energy mix by 2050. Industrial Info is tracking $3.6 billion in Alliant projects.

In the call, Larsen gave an update on some of the company's key projects, including its natural gas-fired West Riverside Energy Center in Beloit, Wisconsin. Larsen said, "In Wisconsin, we're making great progress on our 730-megawatt (MW) West Riverside Energy Center. This highly efficient natural gas resource is over 70% complete and expected to go into service by the end of this year." Construction on the $725 million power plant began in the first half of 2017, with AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Even bigger is the company's large buildout of wind projects in Iowa. Larsen said, "In 2016, the Iowa Utility Board approved the first 500 of our 1,000 MW of planned wind additions in Iowa, and in 2018 the remaining 500 MW was approved. Of the 1,000 MW of approved, new Iowa wind, we are on track to bring 470 MW into service next month, and the remaining 530 MW in 2020."

The windfarms to be completed in March are the 300-MW Upland Prairie Windfarm near Spencer, Iowa, and the 170-MW English Farms Windfarm near Grinnell. Construction on the Upland Prairie Windfarm began in the second half of 2017, with White Construction (Indianapolis, Indiana) providing EPC. The facility will use 122 General Electric (NYSE:GE) wind turbine generators. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Construction on the English Farms Windfarm began late last year. White Construction is providing EPC. The facility is being constructed on a 32,000-acre site and will use 69 General Electric wind turbine generators. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $280 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other windfarms that are part of Alliant's 1-gigawatt Iowa wind buildout include the Phase II expansion of its Whispering Willow North Windfarm near Bradford, which will add 200 MW through the construction of 80 wind turbine generators. Construction is expected to kick off this quarter and take about a year to complete. White Construction also is providing EPC on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $260 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

All of the wind power additions in the state come with power plant retirements. This year, Alliant began the dismantlement and demolition of the Sutherland Generating Station in Marshalltown, Iowa. Units 1, 2 and 3 at the 311-MW plant will be dismantled, with completion set by the end of the year. The plant began operating in 1955 and was permanently closed last summer. Bierlein Companies Incorporated (Midland, Michigan) is the general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Larsen said, "Once facilities are decommissioned, we are restoring and redeveloping the land. Rain gardens, pollinator habitats and sites for solar panels are just some of the ways that we are sustainably reusing our assets."

Alliant's wind ambitions extend outside of Iowa. The company is in the early planning stage for a 200-MW expansion of its Bent Tree Windfarm near Hartland, Minnesota. The project could begin early next year, for completion in late 2021. The project has an estimated TIV of $330 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
