Alloy Resources to Recycle 316L Stainless Steel at Closed Alabama Steel Foundry

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In October of 2003, Alloy Resources Incorporated (Albertville, Alabama) purchased a closed electric steel foundry located in Albertville, Alabama. The 60,000 square feet foundry is located at 1279 Brasher's Chapel Road. Originally, constructed by Webb Wheel Products, Incorporated (Cullman, Alabama) in 1981, the steel foundry manufactured steel truck and trailer wheels and hubs, until it was closed in late 2001. Webb Wheel Products, a member of the Marmon Group of companies (Chicago, Illinois) continues to operate three manufacturing plants in Cullman Alabama, and Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Alloy Resources has plans to restart the meltshop portion of the foundry, but may eventually get into the casting business as well. The company has purchased and installed an Argon-Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) vessel to melt stainless steel scrap. The plant will begin by producing 316L stainless steel slugs and ingots. The 316L stainless steel will most likely be sold to automotive or aerospace die casters in the area.

Local contractors are onsite preparing the meltshop for operation. Alloy Resources wants to be up and operating by December of this year. At some point in the future, the company will evaluate the possibility of starting up the existing mothballed casting line. The operation will initially employ 40.
