Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia) recently announced that it brought 625 megawatts (MW) of wind power and battery energy storage systems (BESS) online in the first half of 2025 in projects spanning Maine, Illinois and Texas. The startup of another windfarm in Washington County, Maine, marked Apex's initial entry into the ISO New England market. The Downeast Windfarm uses 30 Vestas turbines, each rated at 4.2 MW, to provide 126 MW of emissions-free power. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Reed & Reed Incorporated (Woolwich, Maine) broke ground on the project in 2023, taking about two years to complete it. Apex also brought online two battery storage facilities in Texas. Each represents 100 MW of capacity with a 200-megawatt-hour output. Angelo Storage in Tom Green County was Apex's third storage facility to reach operations and is wholly owned by Apex. The other storage facility, the Great Kiskadee BESS unit in Hidalgo County, is the first operational project for SA Grid Solutions, a joint venture of Apex, SK Gas (Seoul, South Korea) and SK Eternix (Seongnam, South Korea). On day one of his second term in office, U.S. President Donald Trump issued executive orders waging war on both offshore and onshore wind developments, and this was cemented further in the spending and tax bill passed July 4, which phases out tax credits for renewable energy projects much sooner than originally planned. Relatively few of the more of the 45 Apex projects being tracked by IIR have broken ground yet and need to start by July next year to qualify for the credits.
One Apex plant seemingly out of immediate danger of losing the tax credit is a solar farm expected to be completed in the next few months in Erie County, Ohio. Apex broke ground on the Wheatstone facility in 2023, employing EPC contractor DEPCOM Power Incorporated (Scottsdale, Arizona) to place more than 230,000 solar modules that will begin providing 125 MW of generation later this year.
