Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Argentine Senate last month approved a new bill establishing a biofuel regulatory framework that seeks to increase biofuel content in diesel and gasoline, boost competition in the sector, and support further industry development. The bill has since moved to the Chamber of Deputies for approval, and its implementation would liberalize the commercialization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), providing producers with a clearer commercial framework.
Four companies are currently advancing SAF projects in Argentina: Avalon, GreenSinnergy, Grupo Bahía Energía, and Santa Fe Bio--a joint venture between YPF and Essential Energy--with combined investments reaching up to US$4 billion.
Valued at more than US$400 million, the Santa Fe Bio project is the most advanced, with the first phase of construction already underway. This initial phase, aimed for completion by the end of 2027, entails repurposing the former San Lorenzo refinery to process up to 250,000 tons per year of pre-treated oils (soy, sunflower, rapeseed, camelina, used cooking oils, and animal fats). These will be exported to Europe as feedstock for SAF production until local processing begins. The second phase, targeted for 2030, is set to produce up to 423 tons per day of renewable diesel and 73 tons per day of SAF. A 170,000-ton-per-year offtake agreement has already been signed with TotalEnergies.
According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are 10 SAF-related projects in Argentina worth more than US$4 billion in investment.
