Argentina Pulp Mill Resumes Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Logística y Transporte Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada (Puerto Piray, Misiones, Argentina) has restarted cellulose production at a mill it purchased in Puerto Piray, which was closed in mid-2011 because of financial issues.

The mill previously belonged to Benfide Sociedad Anonima (Misiones, Argentina), which went bankrupt in August 2009. It was then acquired by its employees, who formed a cooperative, Trabajo e Industria de Puerto Piray Ltda to operate the facility. Along with the economic support of the local government, the newly formed firm managed to run the mill for about two years, but in mid-2011 market conditions in the country brought about the closure of the plant in September. After many attempts to reopen it, the facility was finally bought in December by two brothers from Taiwan.

At present, the mill operates 20 days per month and during the last 10 days, maintenance and upgrade works are carried out. Company officials stated that they want to invest approximately $3.7 million to double the mill's production capacity from 80 tons per day to 150 tons per day. This expansion project includes the replacement, addition and modifications of equipment such as burners, pumps, motors, drives, washer tanks, and others and is expected to begin by mid-2012.

The mill began operating in in 1974 and has a capacity to manufacture 80 tons of pulp per day. Approximately 55 people work at the facility.
