Australia's Strategic Fix for Natural-Gas Availability
Australia's east-coast gas market requires a coordinated strategy to maintain natural-gas availability, protect liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations and support the country's electricity transition. The most practical solution is to sustain coal-seam gas production in Queensland, expand north-to-south pipeline capacity and strengthen domestic-supply arrangements without weakening investment in existing LNG projects.
According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are 756 natural gas-related projects in Australia, with a combined total investment value of US$53.9 billion. The Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Production and Pipelines project databases offer detailed reports.
Australia's strategic fix should focus on three priorities:
Coal-seam gas as a strategic asset
The first element of Australia's strategic response should be a stable framework for sustaining coal-seam gas (CSG) production. CSG is the foundation of eastern Australia's gas system. Queensland's Surat-Bowen Basin supplies feed gas to the Queensland Curtis LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Gladstone LNG projects, while also serving domestic power generators, manufacturers and commercial consumers. Maintaining this production base will require continuous drilling and field-development investment. Approvals for new wells and associated infrastructure should be streamlined and predictable. Long-term supply contracts should encourage producers to maintain upstream capacity instead of focusing only on short-term gas deliveries.
LNG feedstock and domestic supply
The second priority is to balance LNG exports with domestic energy security. Queensland's three LNG projects are supplied primarily by onshore CSG fields and represent a major component of Australia's east-coast LNG system. Reliable feed gas is essential to protect export revenue and keep the upstream, pipeline and liquefaction chain commercially viable. At the same time, LNG producers must provide adequate volumes to domestic users through contracted supply, uncontracted gas and emergency arrangements.
East coast gas grid expansion
The third requirement is expansion of the east-coast gas grid. Australia's east coast holds very large gas resources in Queensland and the Cooper Basin, while southern states face declining production from mature fields in Gippsland and elsewhere. At the same time, the electricity sector is rapidly shifting away from coal toward wind and solar, increasing reliance on flexible gas-fired generation to maintain reliability. The bottleneck is not gas in the ground, but the capacity to move it from north to south. APA Group's East Coast Gas Grid (ECGG) expansion directly addresses a structural imbalance in the national energy system. The core of the program focuses on APA's key transmission assets; the South West Queensland Pipeline (SWQP), Moomba-Sydney Pipeline (MSP) and associated laterals into Victoria. Additional storage, compressor stations, pipeline interconnections and peak-demand capacity should support this expansion. A stronger gas grid would reduce regional supply bottlenecks and enable Queensland gas to respond to shortages in southern markets.
Conclusion
Australia's strategic fix is not simply to reserve more gas or restrict LNG exports. It is to maintain CSG production, protect LNG feedstock, expand pipeline infrastructure and apply clear domestic-supply obligations. This balanced approach would preserve export competitiveness while improving energy security for households, industry and the electricity system.
Key Takeaways
- Australia's east-coast gas market requires a coordinated strategy.
- The first element of Australia's strategic response should be a stable framework for sustaining coal-seam gas (CSG) production.
- The second priority is to balance LNG exports with domestic energy security.
- The third requirement is expansion of the east-coast gas grid.
