Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Baghouses play a major role in keeping power plants, manufacturing facilities, smelters and other industrial producers clean by capturing particulate (dust) emissions before they can be released into the air. Industrial Info's project platform is tracking more than $665 billion in projects globally that include a baghouse as a key environmental control component, including about $69 billion worth in the U.S. alone. Almost all of these projects are to be found in just three industries: Metals & Minerals, Power Generation and Chemical Processing.

The growing demand for air-pollution controls has expanded business opportunities for companies that construct baghouse facilities across various industries. Baghouse technology has evolved from "shakers," where house-like structures contained large screens that captured dust and were mechanically shaken out, to "pulse jet" structures, the most common today, which are more economically efficient.

In North America, Buzzi Unicem SpA's (Casale Monferrato, Italy) U.S. subsidiary has proposed $18 million in baghouse and emission-control replacements and additions at one of the company's cement manufacturing plants. The company aims to reduce sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions at the 1.4 million-ton-per-year cement plant, and currently has Redecam Group SpA (Milano, Italy) onboard for design-engineering services. The project has a kickoff date in December, although it still is in its design stage, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Asia has the largest number of baghouse-related projects of any world region, as well as the highest total investment value. Two projects in Malaysia are set to begin construction at cement and limestone quarries owned by LafargeHolcim Limited (Jona, Switzerland) and Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Both are in their detailed engineering stages. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Rawang and Bahau projects.

In Europe, two of the highest-valued baghouse replacement or addition projects can be found in neighboring countries: Wietersdorfer & Peggauer Zementwerke GmbH (Klagenfurt, Austria) began construction last year on the $11.14 million baghouse replacement in Austria, while HeidelbergCement AG (Heidelberg, Germany) plans to begin construction soon on the $11.14 million baghouse addition in Germany. Both projects are being performed in compliance with national and European Union regulations on pollution controls. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Austrian and German projects.
