Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Missouri is awash in industrial activity, both inside and outside the metropolises of Kansas City and St. Louis. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.3 billion worth of defense plants, data centers, solar farms and much more that is presently being constructed in the state.

One of the largest U.S. aircraft projects presently underway comes from The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) (Arlington, Virginia) at its campus in Berkeley, Missouri (Greater St. Louis), which manufactures defense aircraft. Two sections of the site warrant different activity. Buildings on a parcel of land south of the existing facility are being demolished to make way for a new 880,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. On a parcel of land to the northwest, Boeing is constructing a new hangar, radar-testing facility and 90,000 square feet of auxiliary buildings, including aircraft shelters, a fuel calibration building and a fire house. Spokespersons from Boeing have been tight-lipped about the programs the company will pursue at the new plant, although a new fighter jet for the Air Force seems to be in its sights. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2026, paving the way for further development. Two of the biggest names in Big Tech are building data centers in Kansas City. Both Google Incorporated (Mountain View, California) and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) are underway with projects in the city, with Google at work on a grassroot site and Meta underway on an expansion of an existing facility.

General contractor JE Dunn Construction Group Incorporated (Kansas City) broke ground for Google's "Project Shale" in the second half of 2023. The project represents the first phase of a planned 1.8 million-square-foot campus, with Phase I expected to be completed this fall. Meta began its Phase II expansion on its Kansas City data center earlier this year. This portion of the project entails constructing a 602,000-square-foot data center building. Building 2 is expected to be completed in 2027. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Google and Meta Platforms projects.

Missouri boasts more than $1 billion in solar projects under construction for three large installations ranging in size from 250 megawatts (MW) to 300 MW. The first of these to break ground was AES Corporation's (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) 250-MW Morris solar farm in Adair County, which began construction in 2023 that is expected to wind down this summer. This was followed by Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Split Rail solar facility in Warren County, a 300-MW installation that broke ground last summer and is expected to be completed this fall. Finally, Ranger Power (Chicago, Illinois) broke ground on the Show Me State solar facility in Callaway County earlier this year, expecting to finish construction of the 250-MW solar farm in 2027. The state's Metals & Minerals Industry also is going strong, adding another $1 billion in projects under construction. Cement juggernaut Holcim (Zug, Switzerland) is adding a new finish mill at what it claims to be largest cement mill in the U.S. in Ste. Genevieve, about 60 miles south of St. Louis on the Illinois border. With an approximately $100 million investment, Holcim began the work late last year, stating in a press release: "The expansion will increase production capacity by more than 600,000 metric tons of cement while reducing net CO2 emissions, increasing circularity and accelerating decarbonization across the built environment." In addition, the rail loadout facilities will be improved. The Ste. Genevieve mill was built in 2009 and is equipped with the largest single-kiln line in the world, according to Holcim. The plant has a current production capacity of 4 million tons per year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

At another cement plant in Cape Girardeau, 60 miles south of the Holcim mill and also on the border with Illinois, Buzzi SpA (Casale Monferrato, Italy) is taking steps to lower carbon emissions. The company is converting the fuel line at its kiln to burn natural gas rather than coal and fuel oil, which is intended to reduce emissions. Buzzi also is building a third railcar loadout station and two air slide conveyors. Both projects are in the process of wrapping up. Food & Beverage Industry projects also are prevalent in the state, especially for cold-storage warehousing and distribution, but some food producers are growing their presence in Missouri as well. One of these is companies is Western Smokehouse Partners (Galesburg, Illinois), a co-packing company that is repurposing a 300,000-square-foot former clothes distribution center in Mexico, Missouri, to manufacture Chomps brand meat sticks, a premium version of the snack that features grass-fed beef and venison and antibiotic-free turkey in its product lines. Western Smokehouse kicked off work on the building earlier this year and is expected to have the facility equipped and ready for production near the end of this summer.
