Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Brazilian state-owned Bahiagas (Bahia, Brazil), which is responsible for the distribution of natural gas in the state of Bahia, has selected Azevedo & Travassos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) as the pipeline contractor and Apolo Tubulars (Sao Paulo, Brazil) as the pipeline supplier for the installation of the Itabuna-Ilheus natural gas pipeline. Contracts on the $25 million project were signed in August 2013.
The pipeline is the first stage of a project to distribute natural gas to the major regions of Bahia. The project consists of 36 kilometers of 8-inch pipeline to supply Ilheus City with natural gas from Itabuna Terminal. The goal is to develop the use of natural gas for residential, commercial and industrial uses through different regions of the Bahia state. Bahiagas and Azevedo & Travassos will begin the installation of the pipeline in November 2013 and are scheduled to finish in September 2015.
After completion, Bahiagas will begin the design of the second stage. The development of this project was possible due to the 2007 discovery of gas reserves in the Manati Field of the Camamu Basin.
Azevedo & Travassos is a construction and engineering firm founded in 1922. It began to specialize in oil & gas projects in 1980. Apolo Tubulars is a joint venture between Apolo Tubos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and U.S. Steel (NYSE:X) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania); it specializes in the production of steel pipes.
