Balkhash Thermal Power Plant Under Way in Kazakhstan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last May, Samsung C&T Corporation (SEO:000830) (Seoul, South Korea) and Samruk Energo JSC (Almaty, Kazakhstan) signed an agreement to build the Balkhash Thermal Power Plant near Astana, Kazakhstan. The agreement established the JSC Balkhash TPP joint venture, in which Samsung owns a 75% stake. The Korean company is providing technology and equity financing. Samruk Energo's parent company, National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kaznya JSC, will own the remaining 25%.

Phase I of the power plant, which is currently undergoing site preparation, involves the construction of units 1 and 2. Both units will utilize pulverized coal-fired super-critical boilers to drive two 660-megawatt (MW) steam turbines for an initial generation capacity of 1,320 MW. Construction of the $1.2 billion Phase I is scheduled to finish in 2013, at which time construction of units 3 and 4 will probably commence.

The Balkhash Thermal Power Plant is part of Kazakhstan's economic development initiative. Once complete, the plant will be Kazakhstan's largest privately owned plant and will help provide energy security for the nation.
