Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Earlier this month, Unit 2 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Khulna, Bangladesh, was inaugurated in a ceremony featuring India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The 660-megawatt (MW) unit is expected to double capacity at the Maitree facility to 1.32 gigawatts (GW).
Unit 1 at Maitree started operations in September 2022, after construction started in 2017. The plant was built by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (BIFPCL), which is a joint venture between India's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
The US$2 billion Unit 2 received about US$1.6 billion in funds from India's Concessional Financing Scheme, through a financing agreement with India's EXIM Bank. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence Power Project and Plant databases can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
Industrial Info is tracking more than 180 projects in Bangladesh, totaling more than US$74 billion of investment, that are dedicated to building new capacity for power generation. About 40% of the total investment, or US$29.2 billion, is driven by nuclear power projects, followed by projects utilizing natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) at US$20.14 billion and US$13.72 billion, respectively.
The majority of this investment comes from the city of Pabna, which is home to US$19.33 billion across four projects, followed by Patuakhali (US$10 billion) and Cox's Bazar (US$9.9 billion).
