Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's 500-megawatt (MW) prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), located at Kalpakkam, about 70 kilometers south of Chennai, achieved first criticality on April 6. Criticality marks the stage where a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction is established.

The reactor, developed by BHAVINI (Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited) under the Department of Atomic Energy, uses mixed oxide (MOX) fuel and liquid sodium as coolant--key technical features of fast breeder reactor technology. This milestone transitions the project from construction to the commissioning phase, with further testing required before commercial power generation begins.

The PFBR is designed with a breeding ratio greater than 1, meaning it can produce more fissile material (plutonium-239) than it consumes, significantly improving fuel efficiency. It uses plutonium-uranium MOX fuel derived from spent fuel of pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs), integrating India's existing nuclear fleet into a closed fuel cycle. The reactor operates with liquid sodium coolant at atmospheric pressure, allowing higher thermal efficiency and enhanced safety characteristics compared to conventional reactors.

As part of India's three-stage nuclear program, the PFBR is a critical bridge between uranium-based PHWRs and future thorium-based reactors, supporting long-term fuel sustainability.

With nuclear power currently contributing around 3% of India's electricity generation, such advancements are essential to meeting long-term targets for energy security, decarbonization and base-load stability.
