Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bechtel Corporation, one of the preeminent engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies in the U.S., is at work on several of the major projects in the country. The company's projects cover a range of industrial sectors, including Power, Production and Chemical Processing. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $109 billion worth of U.S. projects in which Bechtel is playing a role.

Easily, one of the largest projects on which Bechtel is providing EPC services is Southern Company's (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) additions of reactors 3 and 4 at the Vogtle nuclear power station in Waynesboro, Georgia. Although construction was slowed after several people at the site tested positive for COVID-19, Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power is still targeting a startup date of November 2021 for Unit 3 and November 2022 for Unit 4. The project, which kicked off construction in 2012, has seen multiple pushbacks of the completion date and budget overruns. The units will add a combined 2,234 megawatts (MW) to the 2,300-MW plant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other substantial projects include the addition of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production trains at Cheniere Energy Incorporated's (NSYE:LNG) (Houston, Texas) Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana and its Corpus Christi facility in Texas. Construction on Train 3 at Corpus Christi began in mid-2018. In the company's third-quarter earnings conference call, Cheniere Chief Executive Officer Jack Fusco said that the train was approaching completion and first LNG production was expected soon. Substantial completion is expected in the first quarter of next year. Construction of Train 6 at Sabine Pass kicked off late last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Each train will provide 4.5 million tons of production capacity. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Train 3 at Corpus Christi and Train 6 at Sabine Pass.

Other notable projects include Royal Dutch Shell's (NYSE:RDS-A) (The Hague, Netherlands) massive Franklin petrochemical complex in Monaca, Pennsylvania. The facility will include a 3 billion-pound-per-year ethylene plant and several derivative units to utilize natural gas feedstock from the Marcellus Shale. Shell did have to suspend and reduce construction activities earlier this year because of COVID-19 as, according to media reports, as many as 8,000 workers were at the site. Construction on the ethane cracker kicked off in early 2017, followed by the duratives units. Construction is expected wrap up in 2022. Click here for a list of related projects.

In addition to Plant Vogtle, other major power projects on which Bechtel is providing EPC services include Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) South Field Energy Center in Wellsville, Ohio, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Construction on the 1,100-MW combined-cycle facility kicked off in late 2018 and is expected to be completed in mid-2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Bechtel also is providing its services to the U.S. defense sector with the construction of a uranium processing facility and related support buildings at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Construction of the three-story, 242,000-square-foot main processing building kicked off in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2025. Also part of the project are a salvage and accountability building, mechanical electrical building, and process support facilities. The overall project has a price tag of $6.5 billion.
