Biofuels Company of America Constructing New Biodiesel Plant in Illinois

A new joint venture biodiesel project, Biofuels Company of America, LLC, a consortium between Bunge North America, Incorporated (Saint Louis, Missouri) and Biodiesel Investment Group, LLC (Memphis, Tennessee), also known as Burke & Associates, have started construction on a new 46 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant that will be located adjacent to Bunge’s existing soybean crushing and oil refinery in Danville, Illinois.

A ceremonial groundbreaking took place in early November 2006, and construction is now in full swing. Ambitech (Danville, Illinois) has been hired as the construction manager for this $40 million project and construction is expected to be completed by March of 2008. The plant will consume 30 million bushels of soybeans per year that will be crushed and refined at Bunge’s Danville plant and the virgin soybean oil will be converted into biodiesel.

Biodiesel production has been quietly growing in Illinois and the state currently has only one large commercial-scale plant in operation. Stepan Company presently operates a 19 million-gallon per year plant in Elwood and plans to expand to 50 million gallons per year over the next 18 to 24 months. Other projects developing in the state include Renewable Energy Group in Cairo (60MM gal/yr); National Trail Biodiesel in Newton (35MM gal/yr); Mid America Biodiesel in Mount Carmel (40MM gal/yr); Nova Biosource Fuels in Seneca (60MM gal/yr) and Blackhawk Biofuels in Freeport (30MM gal/yr).

Once these plants go into operation, Illinois will have the capacity of producing over 300 million gallons per year of biodiesel and with an estimated soybean crop reaching over 434 million bushels annually. Biodiesel plant development should continue to grow in the state in coming years.
