Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The biopharmaceutical company CSL Limited (ASX:CSL) (Parkville, Australia) and its subsidiaries, CSL Behring and CSL Biotherapies, are working together toward a global expansion to meet growing demand for flu vaccinations.
The key to accomplishing the companies goal is through the expansion of flu-vaccine-production capacity. CSL Biotherapies has begun this process by doubling its manufacturing capacity at its Melbourne, Australia, plant to produce about 40 million doses per season. Construction on the $60 million project has been underway for several months.
The second part of the expansion is in the planning stages and involves increasing packaging and filling capacity. CSL has proposed to invest up to $20 million at its Kankakee, Illinois, plant by installing a single-dose (high-speed) syringe-filling line. Construction details for this project have not yet been determined, but the expansion is scheduled to be commissioned and operational in 2010, coinciding with the production expansion in Australia.
After both projects are completed, CSL will be able to proceed with its plan to provide the flu vaccine to the market, in anticipation of increased demand. The Kankakee expansion will enable CSL Behring to assist its sister company, CSL Biotherapies, in the extra packaging and filling requirements it may need because of the immense capacity increase at its Australia site.
CSL Limited is a worldwide provider of research, development, manufacturing and marketing of multiple flu vaccinations, along with other plasma-protein-related biotherapies that focus on treating and preventing serious and rare human medical diseases. The company is one of the worlds largest flu vaccine companies, and in addition to Australia, it also has international facilities in Marburg, Germany, and Bern, Switzerland. North American locations include the Kankakee research and production site and the CSL Behring headquarters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, providing innovative biotherapy research.
