Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazil continues with its solid expansion of renewables. In January, 1.35 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity was added to the network.
The Brazilian National Agency for Electricity (ANEEL) estimates a boost in new power generation of 9.95 GW throughout 2025. Solar and wind energy are expected to dominate the expansion.
The new capacity would fall just short of the record mark reached last year of 10.7 GW.
The news emerges as Brazil closed January with solid numbers. In the first month of the year, 26 new power plants entered commercial operations with a combined capacity of 1.35 GW. Out of those, 13 represented solar power plants with a capacity of 567 megawatts (MW), two were thermoelectric plants representing 459 MW, 10 were windfarms able to produce 315 MW, and one small hydroelectric plant.
Matto Grosso Do Sul and Minas Gerais were the states with the highest new power generation added in January.
Although hydropower continues to dominate Brazil's power generation, solar and wind are expected to continue growing in the next few years. According to the National Operator of the Electric System (ONS), hydropower installed capacity in the national electric grid is expected to drop from 46.3% of the total in 2025 to 41.7% in 2029.
Meanwhile, large-scale wind capacity is forecasted to grow from 33 GW in 2025 to 36 GW in 2029, while solar power could increase from 17 GW to 23.5 GW. Small-scale solar and wind power generation is expected to represent 56.2 GW by the end of the decade.
The expansion of solar and wind electricity aligns with the plans of Inacio Lula da Silva's administration. For example, in January, Lula signed a law establishing the regulatory framework for offshore wind development to harness its potential and offer stability to industry players.
Finally, last year, his government also presented the National Energy Transition policy to promote the development of new renewable energy technologies.
