Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On March 30, Brazil's government signed an agreement to export 2,100 megawatts (MW) to Argentina during the country's upcoming winter season. Since 2005, Brazil has had a deal to supply Argentina with electricity, and last year the country exported 1,500-MW to the neighboring country.
The power that will be exported to Argentina comes from hydroelectric and thermoelectric power stations, which are not currently generating in Brazil. The stations will send 100% of the power generated. The energy generated by hydropower plants will be sent to Argentina between May and August. As part of the deal, Argentina must reciprocate by exporting power to Brazil between September and November. The electricity generated from thermal power facilities will be sent between April and December and will be paid for by Argentina's government.
The countries also signed a deal to start the feasibility studies for the Garabi Hydro Complex, a bilateral project, which is planned to have 1,800 MW of capacity. It would be located on the Uruguay River between Brazil and Argentina.
