Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras (NYSE:EBR) (Eletrobras) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) plans to invest $5.6 billion in 2014, an increase of more than 15% from the $4.71 billion invested in 2013. Eletrobras has 16 generation projects that should be operational by 2014. In fact, a total of $12.18 billion has been invested in Brazilian generation projects that will start up next year.

Eletrobras is taking part in 31 hydropower projects that total 27,982 megawatts (MW) and $47 billion in value, including the 10,442-MW Tapajos Complex of five hydro power stations: Sao Luis Tapajos (6,133 MW), Jatoba (2,388 MW), Cahoeira do Cai (802 MW), Cachoeira dos Patos (538.8 MW) and Jamanxim (881.1 MW). The company also is involved in more than 15 windfarms that total 2,188 MW of projected capacity. All should be operational between 2014 and 2021.

Eletrobras has several power stations that began commercial operations in 2013: Jirau (3,750 MW), Santo Antonio (3,150 MW), Maua (361 MW), Simplicio Hydropower Station (333.7 MW) and Sao Domingos (48 MW). It also has several windfarms in the Sento Se Complex totaling 90 MW. Eletrobras is participating in the 11.2-gigawatt (GW) Belo Monte hydro power project, which is in the state of Para and began construction in 2012.
