Summary
The offshore Buzios field reached 1 million BBL/d with its six currently operational platforms. The addition of new platforms will boost the field's capacity to more than 1.5 million BBL/d.
Buzios Sees Record Output
Petrobras (Rio do Janeiro, Brazil) reported record output of 1 million barrels per day (BBL/d) of oil from its Buzios oil field in the Santos Basin, offshore Rio de Janeiro, by the end of October, making it Brazil's largest oil producer. Buzios is the second oil field to reach such volumes after the Tupi field, which reached the mark in 2019, but has since then averaged lower volumes.
Buzios has the largest reserves in Brazil, holding 11.3 billion barrels. The field has six operational floating production, storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs).
A new platform, P-78 FPSO, arrived at the field last month and was undergoing well interconnection procedures prior to the start of production. The platform will ultimately have a total capacity of 180,000 BBL/d, connected to six production wells, six WAG injectors and one gas injector.
"Reaching 1 million barrels per day is a result that demonstrates the success of our strategies, suited to a field of exceptional magnitude which, in addition to its gigantic volume, also holds substantial reserves of light oil. The startup of new projects such as Búzios 7 and the efficient management of reservoirs contributed to this outcome," said Petrobras Exploration and Production Director Sylvia Anjos.
However, Buzios' expansion is far from ending. Petrobras currently plans to deploy the P-79 FPSO, with a capacity of 180,000 BBL/d, in 2026.
For 2027, three more FPSOs P-80, P-82, and P-83, each with a capacity of 225,000 BBL/d, are scheduled to further expand the asset's output.
With all these additions, the Buzios field will have a production capacity of more than 1.5 million BBL/d.
The company is also studying the possibility of constructing Project Buzios 12 beyond 2030.
Petrobras operates the Buzio field and holds 88.99% shares of the asset, followed by CNOOC with 7.34% and CNODC with 3.67%.
Key Takeaways
- The Buzios field reached production of 1 million BBL/d.
- By the end of the year, seven offshore platforms will be operational at Buzios, further expanding capacity.
- Petrobras foresees the deployment of another four FPSOs at Buzios between 2026 and 2027.
