Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020 in the U.S., the e-commerce sector has grown by leaps and bounds, and leading the pack is Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Industrial Info is tracking more than $22.4 billion in active Amazon projects in the U.S. While distribution and warehousing projects in the form of fulfillment centers and air hubs lead the company's spending, Amazon also is at work on data centers. California, with more than $2.7 billion of these projects, leads other U.S. states in terms of project spending.

California provides a representative sampling of the types of projects on which Amazon is at work, with a range of fulfillment centers, an air hub and data centers. Amazon's largest project in the state is a fulfillment center on the southern outskirts of San Diego, near the Mexican border. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the facility will be one of the largest buildings ever constructed in San Diego County. The five-story fulfillment center will encompass 2.6 million square feet. East of Los Angeles near the San Bernardino International Airport, Amazon is constructing a 658,500-square-foot regional air hub complex featuring 14 aircraft parking aprons and 380 trailer parking spaces to increase the company's air and ground distribution in the area. Construction kicked off early last year and is expected to wrap up later this year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Amazon also is at work on a couple of data centers in the state. The largest of these is being built in Santa Clara and entails demolishing an existing building formerly used by General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) (Reston, Virginia) and constructing a three-story, 279,840-square-foot facility that will have 60 megawatts of power. The facility will help provide Amazon's cloud data services to the Bay Area. Construction kicked off earlier this year, with Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) as the general contractor. The project is expected to be completed next summer. Amazon's largest project under construction in the U.S. is a grassroot air hub in Hebron, Kentucky, which began in mid-2019 and is approaching completion. The 3 million-square-foot building will include a 350,000-square-foot loading dock, and the facility will feature more than 100 aircraft parking spaces and be able to handle more than 200 aircraft takeoffs and landings per day. One of Amazon's largest distribution and sorting centers is being built in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The five-story, 4 million-square-foot building will be highly automated and, according to local news media, will be able to store up to 20 million pieces of merchandise for customers. The facility will allow Amazon to ship books, electronics, toys and other smaller items across Colorado and into neighboring states. Construction kicked off in early 2020 and is expected to wrap up soon. One of Amazon's largest data center projects is the construction of a new building on its campus in New Albany, Ohio, northeast of Columbus. The company is under way with a fourth building on the campus, which will have 170,000 square feet. Construction kicked off late last year and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Holder Construction Group LLC (Herndon, Virginia) is the general contractor on the project. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
