U.S. on Track for $79.5 Billion in Industrial Manufacturing Project Completions This Year
Industrial Info is tracking more than $79.5 billion of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects with a targeted completion date this year.
Among the automotive projects that have wrapped up this year is Stellantis NV's (NYSE:STLA) (Amsterdam, Netherlands) conversion and expansion project at its Mack Avenue II plant in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to renovations, a new 685,000-square-foot paint shop and test track were built to enable the company to produce the new three-row Jeep sport utility vehicle and a new plug-in hybrid. The project kicked off in 2019, and construction was affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the project was completed in the first half of this year. E-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) has emerged as leader in the distribution & warehousing sector, with the company's fulfillment centers springing up across the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than $11.8 billion in Amazon projects that were completed or are planned for completion by the end of the year. Among the largest of these facilities was one completed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, earlier this year. Construction on the five-story, 4 million-square-foot distribution and sorting center began early last year. Light rail projects also have featured prominently in this year's completion activity. Examples include Phase II of the Third Street Light Rail Transition Extension project in San Francisco, California. The project, which began in 2013 and wrapped up this summer, entailed constructing a 1.7-mile underground rail extension with four underground stations and one surface station. Other major light rail projects were completed in Seattle, Washington; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Los Angeles, California.
Another bright spot for project activity this year has been data centers, with companies such as Amazon, Facebook Incorporated (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) and Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California) taking prominent roles in completion activity. Examples of completed projects include Alphabet's Phase II construction at its data center campus in Henderson, Nevada, on the southeastern outskirts of Las Vegas. The campus expansion project entailed a 279,770-square-foot, two-story second data center building and approximately 33,000 square feet of office space to help meet increased demand for Google's services. Holder Construction Corporation (Atlanta, Georgia) was the general contractor on the project, which kicked off in 2019 and was completed early this year. Approximately $3.9 billion in heavy manufacturing sector projects have been completed or are planned for completion this year. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) performed upgrades and equipment additions to its refrigerator and dishwasher plants at its campus in Louisville, Kentucky. The projects entailed the addition of new equipment, a new manufacturing line, paint booths and more to help fulfill increased demand for dishwashers and to manufacture various refrigerator models.
