Canada Approves Work Start on Prince Rupert Gas Pipeline

Reports related to this article:

Written by Jesse Broehl for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is taking a notable step forward with the government of British Columbia determining that work has started on TC Energy Corporation's (Calgary, Alberta) Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline. The pipeline had been on hold pending environmental reviews and now will proceed into a full construction phase. It could eventually feed up to 3.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of gas to a planned LNG export terminal along the British Columbia coastline. Gas to Deliver to Ksi Lisims LNG Plant Under Advanced Stage Development
The PRGT project was approved in 2014 to run about 466 miles between Hudson's Hope in northeastern British Columbia and Lelu Island near Prince Rupert. It is designed deliver between 2.0 to 3.6 Bcf/d of gas to its terminus at the planned Ksi Lisims LNG Production Terminal under development by Rockies LNG Partners. The Ksi Lisims LNG plant is designed for 1.6 Bcf/d but has yet to be fully approved, thus leaving some regulatory and execution risk. However, if all proceeds to plan it could be operational by the end of 2028.

Details of Determination Clearing Government Hurdle
British Columbia's chief executive assessment officer of the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) made the determination of work starting on the PRGT. This clears the way for the project a government milestone that keeps its permit in place for the life of the project, unless it is cancelled or suspended.

The environmental assessment certificate approving the PRGT project was issued in 2014, following the EAO's environmental assessment. The certificate required the project to have been substantially started by November 25, 2024, for it to remain valid.
