Toronto plays host to delegates from the G7 later this week for a meeting on energy and the environment. Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson told Reuters that Canada is looking for ways to secure supplies of critical minerals for member states.
"We will see this week many examples of us moving beyond talks to firm commitments to fund several types of tools (to secure critical minerals)," Hodgson said Tuesday.
Carney is on a tour of Asia, meanwhile, hoping to secure a free-trade agreement with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Apart from Japan, G7 members are heavily dependent on ASEAN member state China for supplies of critical materials necessary for everything from electric vehicles to flashlights.
Copper is a key component of technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbines and power transmission. The project aims to extract 34.5 million tons per year of copper and 58.6 million pounds per year of zinc.

Elsewhere, Rio Tinto plc (London, England) is looking to start lithium production at the Nemaska Lithium facility in Quebec. The effort includes the Whabouchi Mine and concentrator, where spodumene concentrate will be transported to a plant that will convert the concentrate to lithium hydroxide, consumed in the production of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Carney, for his part, said he was working to broker a free-trade deal with ASEAN member states. Thanking Malaysia for hosting the regular ASEAN summit, both parties discussed the signing of a bilateral letter of intent to deepen investments in liquified natural gas (LNG), oil, nuclear and renewable energy.
"The world is changing rapidly, and Canada must dramatically change its economic strategy," he said Monday. "We must make generational investments to build our economy at home and work relentlessly to diversify our trade partnerships abroad."
Canada is already tapping markets in Asia through the LNG Canada facility in British Columbia. LNG Canada, led by Shell plc (London, England), delivered its first batch of LNG in July. Total capacity is expected to reach 14 million metric tons per year. It's the only facility currently delivering LNG from the western shores of North America.

Mining Projects Chart New Paths
Carney's government is already making strides of its own. The prime minister included the McIlvenna Bay copper and zinc mine in Saskatchewan on a list of priority nation-building projects. Troubles with U.S. Could Spell Opportunity
Carney is working to expand trade opportunities outside of North America, seeking to diversify beyond the U.S. as President Donald Trump routinely turns his ire toward Canada. Carney's government has set a goal of doubling non-U.S. trade in the next decade."The world is changing rapidly, and Canada must dramatically change its economic strategy," he said Monday. "We must make generational investments to build our economy at home and work relentlessly to diversify our trade partnerships abroad."
