"Faced with uncertainty, Canada's new government is making bold choices to grow our economy stronger than ever before -- with major investments, faster approvals, and a clear signal to workers and industry: it's time to build," Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday.
Carney is working on nation-building projects to shore up a Canadian economy flirting with recession. Facing the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, his government has committed to halving U.S. trade in the face of stiff tariff threats.
Carney, a former central bank governor, unveiled a list of six projects that would be referred to the newly-created Major Projects Office.
The Ksi Lisims export terminal for LNG slated for Pearse Island off British Columbia could become Canada's second-largest LNG facility and boast some of the lowest emissions globally. (See project report.) It would need the proposed 500-mile Prince Rupert gas transmission project and another 60 miles of electricity supply lines.
The Crawford nickel project in Ontario would support tapping what the Canadian government believes is the second-largest nickel deposit in the world, supporting battery and low-carbon steel technology. (Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Metals * Minerals Project Database can click here for more details on the project. Like Ksi Lisims, the facility's projected emissions are well below the global average.
In Quebec, support goes to the second phase of the Matawinie graphite mine. Operator Nouveau Monde Graphite (Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec) believes it can tap some 116,00 tons of natural graphite concentrate annually at an open-pit mine located about 90 miles north of Montreal. (See project report.)
Northcliff Resources (Vancouver, British Columbia) had its Sisson tungsten mine referred to the Major Projects Office. The Canadian government believes the facility will position it as a major global supplier. Project details can be found here.
In Nanuvut in the Canadian arctic, the Nukkiksautiit hydroelectric project will support efforts by the indigenous community to advance a cleaner economy by replacing regional reliance on some 4 million gallons of imported diesel annually.
"Canada must start by realizing our full potential as an energy superpower," a statement from the prime minister's office read. "We are the fourth largest natural gas producer in the world, we possess an electricity grid that is over 80% clean, and we are among the world's top producers of critical minerals that will power the clean economy of the future."
So far in his first full year in office, Carney's administration has allocated some USD$11.4 billion for nation-building projects. Trump, for his part, has suspended bilateral trade talks with Canada after an ad critical of his tariff policies was broadcast in Ontario during the World Series tournament for Major League Baseball between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays.
