Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Richmond, Virginia) started with the concept in the mid-1990s of a 60-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle cogeneration (cogen) facility in Murcia, near Cartagena, Spain. That development has grown by 2,000% to a massive 1,200 MW facility that when complete, will be able to support power for over one million households or industrial equivalent.
The natural gas-fired plant was initially planned as a $50 million, 60 MW plant with a combustion turbine/generator (CT) set that provided heat for heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) that provided steam for local hosts and drove a steam turbine/generator (ST) for an electrical output of 60 megawatts to be complete in 2001. The project, now about 1,200 MW, is to be in commercial operation in the third quarter of 2006, and once complete will cost close to $1 billion. AES believes that this new plant should generate revenues of $130 million per year.
AES had selected privately-owned Initec Energia, a division of Initec SA (Madrid, Spain), as the engineer and constructor and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation (OTC:MSBHY) (Tokyo, Japan), as the major equipment vendor. MHI is to provide three 400 MW power trains, each with a CT, a vertical HRSG and a 701F single shaft ST.
